Summer Reading

All new and returning students entering grades 6 through 12 are required to complete summer reading; book selections are listed below. Sixth graders will fill out a special form (attached below); grades 7-12 will complete dialectical journals (also attached below).

Note:  some of the books listed as choices for second novels in the older grade levels (8-11) may deal with mature themes. When choosing books with your student, please be conscious of that and make the selection that best suits your family and student. Each grade level has options for this reason.

6th Grade
  • Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl
  • Rain, Reign by Anne M. Martin
7th Grade

Choose two:

  • The Skin I'm In by Sharon G. Flake
  • A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
  • The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton
8th Grade

Required for all:

  • Claudette Colvin: Twice Towards Justice by Philip Hoose
  • Also, choose one from the the list below;

      Honors classes choose two:

  • The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
  • The Omnivore's Dilemma [Adult or Young Reader version] by Michael Pollan

9th Grade

Choose two books from this list:

10th Grade

Required for all:

  •  Atonement by Ian McEwan

     HONORS also choose one of the following:

11th Grade

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison is required for all incoming 11th grade students. There will be a test on the book during the first week of school.

Additionally, each student must choose to read one of the following and there
will be an assignment given about the book during the first week of school:

1. The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien

2.The Devil’s Highway: A True Story by Luis Alberto Urrea
